New Security Update (2FA) for .my Domain Names

Thursday, 26 February 2015

Dear Valued Customers,

As part of our ongoing efforts to safeguard your valuable domain name and improve the security features of MYNIC Domain Name Management System, we are introducing a second layer of identity verification called Two Factor Authentication (2FA). We have already sent the first e-mail announcement to your respective Technical Contact person of your .my domain name(s) on 10th February 2015 to take the necessary action in registering their mobile number for the purpose of this 2FA implementation that will be launched on 10th March 2015.

When you have submitted your application to modify your Name Server, there is a second check to make sure the submission is really an authorized transaction. This will be in the form of a SMS sent to your registered mobile phone number to ensure that our customers have a better peace of mind when using our Domain Management System to make any Domain Name Server (DNS) modifications.

In order to make this successful, your Technical Contact person as stated in MYNIC database is required to register a mobile phone number latest by 9th March 2015. The registered mobile phone number will not be displayed in WHOIS to protect the 2FA security.

Please take this important note that failure to register your mobile phone number will not allow you to make any necessary modification of your Domain Name Server (DNS).

To register, please follow these steps:

  1. Login into MYNIC Domain Management System using your valid Technical Contact Username, Password and Contact code.
  2. Then under ‘Link’ at the homepage of your account, click on the link “Register Mobile Phone No” and follow the subsequent steps

On top of that, we would like to highlight that with the effective of the 2FA implementation, there will be changes on the modification of Domain Name Server IP address and there are as below:

  1. Option to modify Domain Name Server IP address will ONLY be applicable to domain names with glue records (name server addresses that are subdomains of the domain itself);
  2. Example of a domain name with Glue Record:
  3. Domain Name: mynic.my
  4. Name Server Hostname: ns1.mynic.my
  5. IP Address: 123.456.12.3
  6. Domain Name Server IP address modification will no longer requires MYNIC’s approval, it will be auto-approved.

For further details, you may refer to our 2FA FAQ . Kindly disregard this announcement should you have already registered your Technical Contact’s mobile phone.

Should you have any further enquiries, please call our customer care line at 603-89917272 or e-mail to customercare@mynic.my
